Winter Cocktails to Try in Cooler Weather

It’s the time of year for warm cocktails and lots of whiskey. Here are some fun recipes if you want to try something new.

Cranberry Apple Hot Toddy–A fun, sweeter twist on the traditional hot toddy puts emphasis on the fall flavors of apple and cranberry.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 ounces bourbon
  • 2 ounces of apple juice
  • 3 ounces cranberry juice
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1/2 lemon’s juice
  • Star anise pod and apple slices for garnish

Heat all three juices in saucepan. Add honey, stir and remove from heat. Pour into glass with bourbon and stir some more, then garnish with apple slices and a star anise.

Winter Negroni–This cocktail uses a twist of caramelized orange to bring an extra layer of fruity flavor to this classic cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 195g caster sugar
  • 1 orange, cut into 5mm slices, plus juice of 2 oranges
  • 1 tbs juniper berries (optional)
  • Ice cubes, to serve
  • 1 cup (250ml) gin
  • 1 cup (250ml) red vermouth
  • 1 cup (250ml) Campari

Fill a small bowl with 1/2 cup sugar. Dip each side of the orange slices to coat with sugar, then heat in a greased frypan on medium. Cook for two or three minutes each side, or until caramelized. Next, put the juniper, orange juice, and remaining caster sugar in a saucepan and heat on medium-low, stirring occasionally while sugar dissolves. Cook until juices thicken. In a pitcher, combine the gin, vermouth and Campari, then pour a few glasses (makes a total of 8 servings). Pour the warm syrup over the top and drop in an orange slice. You can add ice to the liquors to smooth their flavor.

It can be easy to let the cool weather get you down. These bright, flavorful cocktails are sure to raise your mood.
